The Municipality of Lizzano in Belvedere and its territory are distinguished by a rich and fascinating history. Since time immemorial these places have been shaped by the human presence, who left behind a series of items and documents as witness to their passage. The discovery of small fragments of flint and terracotta tools from the Stone Age and the Bronze Age around Sboccata dei Bagnadori and Rocca Corneta testifies the presence of early humans in these areas during favourable seasons. Lizzano in Belvedere has all the characteristics needed to experience a pleasant vacation, from the most diversified and comfortable hotels, trattorias, restaurants and pizzerias, to lodges and other locations for short and restorative breaks. Moreover, each season comes with its own activities for sport lovers, who can indulge themselves among parks and snow-capped peaks immersed in the mountain nature. The Municipality territory suits all tastes, and offers a range of activities both for those who simply wish to unwind, and for those who are willing to spend a more active holiday. Perhaps the most estimable evidence of Lizzano in Belvedere’s ancient history is the temple, mentioned as early as 553 A.D, representing one of the oldest buildings in the whole province of Bologna. The structure of this small shrine, built during the byzantine domination between the 7th and the 8th centuries, recalls the round shapes of the rotundas in Ravenna.
Following a Lombard donation, the territory of Lizzano came under the administration of the Benedictine abbey of Nonantola for some centuries. Just before the 12th century, Lizzano was incorporated to the Municipality of Bologna and further fortified with the construction of a castle on the top of Mount Belvedere in defence of the newly established borders. Next to the temple rose the ancient pieve (parish church) of San Mamante, now disappeared, which was characterised by a screen façade and a plain rectangular plan. Due to its very poor conditions, the building was completely rebuilt in 1931.
The modern side of Lizzano deserves special appreciation, the alleys, squares, houses and public buildings being the clear evidence of a wealthy social life, from which the vacationers can benefit in turn. Within easy reach of the town, you can explore the old village of Sasso, dominated by the oratory of Santa Annunziata
