The small town of Farnè is famous for its perfectly preserved architectural style, typical of the area, where stone is by far the most widely used material, as can be seen in the slab sandstone’s roofs, the round-shaped chimneys and in the stone figures on some houses. All these elements are like a captivating catalogue of the Apennine’s construction history, waiting to be discovered. Chiesina, a small village not far from Farnè, is also worth visiting, especially thanks to the church dedicated to Madonna del Carmine, built in 1662 and dominated by an interesting bell tower decorated with different stone faces.
Perched on the slopes of Mount Riva, the tiny settlement of Ca’ dei Lanzi is now uninhabited, but is supposed to have been functioning as Customs House on the border with the Duchy of Modena for centuries.
The nearby village of Ca’ Julio and the ancient ruins of a tower-house, not far from Ca’ dei Lenzi, are also well worth a visit.
