The recently-established
village of Querciola was born around a small church dedicated to the Blessed
Virgin of Saint Luke . built to commemorate the “dried flowers miracle”,
according to which dead flowers, when laid down on a particular oak’s bark,
would miraculously bloom.
The village and its modern
centre, rising at the foot of Mount Belvedere, are in full
development. The ruins of the ancient castle, erected in 1297 by the
Municipality of Bologna in defence of its borders, dominate the area from the
mount’s top. One of the fiercest battles of the Italian Campaign was fought here
in the spring of 1945 to breach the German outpost established in the castle
itself, of the most coveted strongholds along the Gothic Line.
