This is the only example in Italy of work by the celebrated Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. It was inaugurated in 1978 and completed in 1994 with the construction of the bell tower. It is considered one of the most important examples of contemporary religious art.
The asymmetric ceiling conveys the light inwards toward the church’s single nave, and especially on the altar toward which baptistery opens. Aalto penned both the structure and the interior design and furnishings.
