The library was founded in 1973 in the premises of the former Court, as part of the Provincial Consortium Public Reading of Bologna, of which it still retains some books. In 2004 it was moved to its current location, a 1903 building originally used as a slaughterhouse and later as a fire station and municipal warehouse. The restoration has maintained the original structure of the building, except for a partial closure of the internal cloister in order to allow a passage "covered" between the various areas of the library. It hosts an exhibition of contemporary local artists (Mauro Manara, Anna Boschi, Davide Bassi).
