Piazza di Porta Ravegnana houses the Two Towers, symbol of Bologna, and the statue of San Petronio, patron saint of the city. Its name is probably due to the ancient presence of the door from which the road leading to Ravenna departed: Via San Vitale.
Over the centuries the square has undergone various transformations, and the changes made between the 19th and 20th centuries have made it mainly a hub from which various arteries of the centre branch off, including Via Zamboni, Via San Vitale, Strada Maggiore and Via Rizzoli.
