The Lighthouse of the Fallen of the Mountains is the only mountain lighthouse in Italy offering enchanting views over the surrounding Apennines and is the symbol of Gaggio Montano, a charming town located in the Bologna Apennines near the famous Rocchetta Mattei.
The Gaggio lighthouse was designed by the engineer Giuseppe Rinaldi and built on the Sasso di Rocca, a monument dedicated to the war dead in the two world wars. The large Sasso di Rocca, the ophiolite rock on which it rests, overlooks the town and is visible from all access roads. The characteristic historic town centre is spread all around it.
