BolognaLibraries
The Italian Women's Library in Bologna (Biblioteca Italiana delle Donne di Bologna) is today in Italy the most important library specialising in female culture, gender studies and feminism. Located within the Santa Cristina Complex, it was founded in the late seventies thanks to a project developed by the Orlando Association (Associazione Orlando): an association of women active in research and politics, who wanted to establish an autonomous institution to promote the culture of gender difference and female public presence. The library has a heritage of about 30,000 volumes of which over 20,000 already included in the single catalogue of the National Library System and 495 periodicals of which 141 are still active. It also organises conferences and conventions on women's issues, book presentations and meetings with authors.
