The ethnographic museum “G. Carpani” of Poggiolforato,
established in 1976, is the result of the former mayor Giovanni Carpani’s
passion for local culture and history, who managed to gather a considerable
collection of items from spontaneous donations made by artisans and citizens of
Lizzano in Belvedere. The exhibition is arranged in five distinct sections:
castagno (chestnut production), artigianato(handicraft), pastorizia
(pastoralism), religiosità(religiousness) and tessitura(weaving), all of them
portraying an important feature of the local farming lifestyle.
The museum has indeed recreated the complete production cycle of a
chestnut, an activity of paramount importance, from the chestnut harvest to
its final consumption, and displays a remarkable collection of utensils hailing
from shoemakers’, stonecutters’ and carpenters’ workshops.
Another essential activity has always been pastoralism: Shepherds’ tools
and utensils for carding and weaving can be observed here, together with the
detailed reconstruction of a large loom, still functioning today. Visitors can
moreover take the chance to visit the “Catinelle” House Museum, where they can
admire a typical farmhouse, reconstructed here with original furnishings from
the 19th century and the interwar period.
