The Zena Castle (Castello di Zena) stands at the foot of Monte delle Formiche and was established as a fortified village as part of the possessions of Matilde di Canossa.
Originally the castle had a defensive function, as was demonstrated by certain architectural elements, such as the towers, the weapons room and the cisterns, but also a “civil” value for the community surrounding it.
During the Second World War it was the seat of a German command and a prison and was bombed several times. The inscriptions that the prisoners of war engraved on the walls are still present.
