Porta San Mamolo stood in a strategic position, at the intersection of the street of the same name and the ring road. It was the main gateway to the Bolognese hills, an area rich in nature and patrician villas. Its construction dates back to the 12th century, and over the centuries it has been renovated and strengthened several times.
Like many other city gates, Porta San Mamolo was equipped with a drawbridge and a cassero, a fortified structure with a square plan. Over the centuries, it underwent several modifications, but its general appearance remained virtually unchanged until the 19th century.
Unfortunately, the story of Porta San Mamolo has a sad ending. In the 19th century, with the expansion of the city and changing urban planning needs, it was decided to tear down the ancient walls and demolish the gates. Porta San Mamolo, like many others, was a victim of this choice. In 1903, the gate was demolished to make way for new buildings.
Despite its demise, Porta San Mamolo lives on in the memory of the Bolognese. Today, in its place, there is a street that still bears its name, a small reminder of a glorious past.
Even though the gate no longer exists, you can still immerse yourself in the history of Bologna and imagine what life was like in the city when Porta San Mamolo was standing. We recommend you take a walk along Via San Mamolo, visit the historical centre and discover the other monuments that have marked the history of this city.
