San Piero a Sieve was established in the Middle Ages near the old bridge that crosses La Sieve, a river part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. For centuries, the bridge has represented the only connection along the way connecting Bologna to Florence. Later owned by the Medicis, it developed considerably under the protection of the family, which also erected the Fortezza Medicea di San Martino and the Castello mediceo del Trebbio. It is now one of the main stops along the Via degli Dei, a trail connecting Bologna to Florence.
