Must-attend autumn exhibitions
Updated on 18 September 2024 From Bologna Welcome
An exceptionally varied exhibition season is coming up in autumn, with art events spanning the most diverse styles and periods, from science to photography.
The autumn season begins with an important focus on the artist Antonio Ligabue. The artist is presented in two different ways at Palazzo Albergati and Palazzo Pallavicini.
At Palazzo Albergati, the exhibition, open from 19 September 2024 to 30 March 2025, stages the representation of his intimately troubled life, from his exclusion from society to his desire for redemption, with over 100 works, some of which have never been seen before.
At Palazzo Pallavicini, the exhibition will be on display from 3 October 2024 to 28 February 2025 and tells the story of the artist's tormented life, as well as his psyche, through 120 works, (including 81 paintings - 12 self-portraits, 14 sculptures, 17 drawings and 15 engravings).
From 12 September 2024 Martin Parr's iconic photographic exhibition at the Archaelogical Civic Museum in Bologna can be visited. Until 6 January 2025 it will be possible to view a selection of 60 photographs, accompanied by the installation ‘Common Sense’, which presents about 200 shots. In addition, an unpublished interview tracing the career of the famous contemporary documentary photographer will be available.
At Palazzo Fava, from 21 September 2024 to 4 May 2025, a new exhibition by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, known for his sensitivity in the lota in favour of human rights, is coming up. Entitled Ai Weiwei. Who am I?, the exhibition draws inspiration from a dialogue between the artist and an artificial intelligence, highlighting Ai Weiwei's conflict between tradition and experimentation.
MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna hosts a large solo exhibition by Robert Kusmirowski until 6 January 2025, in the Ciminiere Room.
The exhibition represents a sort of continuation of the link between art and memory that annually enriches the programme of initiatives around the Museum for the Memory of Ustica.
As usual, Palazzo Pallavicini is doubling up and proposing a second exhibition until 16 February lead by photographer and activist Tina Modotti. About one hundred precious works and documents, combining art and activism, with a focus on her portraits and photographs of life and revolution.
A selection of photographs from the 1990s to the present day, one-off works made with darkrooms, the size of an entire room, will be on display at MAST from 11 October. The German artist's subjects (buildings, machines, industrial sites) the device used to shoot them and the resulting prints are truly monumental, veritable challenges to space and time.
Alex Trusty. Contemporary Museum Watching
From 16 November 2024 to 16 February 2025, the Collezioni Comunali d'Arte of the Musei Civici di Bologna will host Alex Trusty's photographic exhibition. The artist, through a stolen shot, captures the emotion of the public in front of the masterpieces, transforming the visit to the museum into a unique experience. More than 50 photographs will take you on a journey through the wonderful rooms of the museum.
